We all do it. We stop ourselves or our company from dreaming big dreams. We set limits. Many times unconsciously. And it keeps us from creating the next best version of our company. And of ourselves.
These limits can come in many forms:
1. Putting our largest rival up on a pedestal: “I wish we could do that.”
2. Thinking our team cannot achieve more or better: “We could never pull that off.”
3. Thinking that this is just the way our industry operates: “All our customers want is the lowest price.”
This Week:
Create a running of list of when you’ve had a thought that included the word “should.” “Shoulds” often tell us where we are creating limits:
-
Our customers should see more value in…
-
I should be able to…
-
They should be able to…
-
Our company should be able to…
Now, from that list, select the one that gives you the most pause. The one that feels the most limiting.
Then ask a few people into your office, or have lunch with someone smarter than you, and discuss your limit with them. Ask them how you “could” overcome that limit or roadblock. What are you not seeing? What could you do first? And then what? And then what…
Sometimes, it take others to show us that our limits aren’t real. But it starts with seeing them.
