Innovation can be found in places where you least expect it. Oftentimes small places. Places that are hidden. It’s often in these places where we can find the beginnings of a change that’s needed to make our company more competitive. Our customers happier. Our advantage more meaningful and therefore more sustainable.
So where do you start? I suggest you start by finding and then getting really curious about bright spots throughout your company:
-
Look for a new client that closed very quickly. Who sold it? Who was it sold to? What did the salesperson say? Why did they buy so quickly?
-
Find a customer segment that has higher than average margins. What pains do they have that you seem to be relieving? How did they find you? Who is doing the buying?
-
Look for a product or service category that seems to be growing the fastest or has the shortest sales cycle.
-
Which customer-driven process seems to be going the smoothest? Has the least headaches? Delights the customer the most?
The list could go on, but you get the idea. Ask your team to help. When you find bright spots, dig deeper to see if there is an idea, process or approach that could be leveraged into a bigger strategy.
