That idea you had? About how to solve a customer problem better? What did you do with it? Where did it go?
Innovation is an odd thing. It happens when we least expect it. When we are doing something else. Or when a customer voices a frustration. Or when an employee says “Hey boss, what if we…”
Think about the last time you had such an idea that had promise. You thought about it for a couple of days. Maybe told others. But the idea faded for a multitude of reasons.
Next time, do this instead:
- Pitch the idea to a client, as imperfect as it might be.
- Edit the idea based on the feedback.
- Pitch it again–it’s still imperfect, but less so now.
- Repeat, but do it quickly.
- Listen for tangential ideas–where innovation often happens.
Think minimal viable product or service. The more you try, the better. Quickly kill the ideas that don’t show merit. The good ideas that solve a customer problem in more, better or different ways will reveal themselves. You’ll know.
